How are your rodents packaged?
All of our rodents are euthanized with CO2 and promptly placed
in 4 mil zipper bags. The bags are then frozen on flat trays to keep all
items easy to separate. They are then placed in stacking storage boxes
to await shipment. Inventory is rotated regularly to assure that you receive
a fresh product. Special packaging is available upon request. Please allow
up to two weeks processing for special requests. Vacuum packaging is also
available at your request.
What do you feed you mice and rats?
All of our mice and rats are fed the NIH #31M Rodent Diet. This is a nutritionally
balanced, specially formulated rodent diet. For more information, please
How should I defrost my rodents?
There are several acceptable methods used to defrost frozen
prey items, the most important thing to remember is that the food
should be completely defrosted before it is given to your pet. One
method of defrosting rodents is placing them in the refrigerator
over night, please remember that larger items take longer to thaw.
Another way to defrost the rodents is in a ziplock bag placed in
warm (not hot) water. After rodents are thawed, you may hold them
under a heat lamp for several seconds to increase outer body temperature
and thus make them more appealing for your pet.
Why should I feed frozen instead of live prey?
Frozen prey items are far less harmful to your pet. Though
all of our mice and rats are free of endo and ecto parasites before
they are even frozen, there is still a risk of a rodent attacking
your pet and causing it harm. In difficult cases where live prey
is required, please call and place your order with one of our customer
service representatives.
Why should I buy special breeder mice and rats?
For breeder colonies SW mice and SD rats are the recommended
strains. These animals produce larger litters than other strains
of mice & rats. Mice can be bred at about 7 weeks of age, while
rats should be set up at approximately 8 weeks. Breeding ratios
are normally 3:1, but other people prefer a 4 or 5:1 ratio. We do
not recommend buying feeders for breeding purposes, as you are bound
to get multiple strains, most likely including some inbred strains,
that will cause reduced production.
